In 2017, the Salamatof Tribe began the process of establishing its formal Tribal government — twenty-eight years after first being organized as a non-profit Tribal Council in 1989, and more than forty years after the Alaska Native land claims settlement of 1971. The Tribe received Federal recognition in 1993, marking an important milestone in our ongoing journey of self-determination and cultural preservation.

The mission of the Salamatof Tribe is to honor our sovereignty while preserving the history, culture, and values that define who we are. We are committed to caring for our people, our lands, and our resources — guided by Dena’ina law, tradition, and respect for all generations. Through this work, we strive to strengthen our community, uphold justice, and create opportunities that improve the lives of every Tribal citizen.
